Towards the end of the firing we do a reduction cool down, then everything is mudded up to let the kiln slowly cool for a week or more. The Alder grows on our property as well as the Maple. (120 hours). Starting with Fir for the first 40 hours to develop a good ash bed, then 40 hours with Alder, a plentiful and easily resourced fuel. We finish with 40 hours of Maple, which accounts for most of the colors. This leaf was near the front of the kiln and received a good amount of ash resulting in the golden/green coating on the top surface. The underside shows the flow of flame and ash. It can be used for a candy dish/food tray or as wall décor. Points darkened to a deeper gray and the back side shows the flow of the flames and ash.
